<image:title>Beverly Hills History - The Land That Became Beverly Hills</image:title>
<image:caption>This image of Coldwater Canyon from 1910 provides a glimpse of what greeted early settlers when they arrived in the area that would become Beverly Hills. Thousands of years before the first stiletto heel stepped onto Rodeo Drive, this was the land of the Tongva. The indigenous people of this area had no recorded language, so very little is known about them except that they enjoyed the wonderful California weather and found abundant food sources in the canyons.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Beverly Hills History - The Indigenous People</image:title>
<image:caption>The name Tongva means “a human being who lives here.” The Tongva did not believe the land belonged to them, they believed they belonged to the land. They called this place “the gathering of the waters” which the Spanish translated as El Rodeo de las Aguas. European diseases, assimilation, and servitude to the Spanish, Mexican, and American colonists tragically wiped out the Tongva. The only one who remains kneels atop the Electric Fountain at the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Beverly Hills History - The Early Settlers</image:title>
<image:caption>The very first landowner in Beverly Hills was a Afro-Latina woman. Her name was Maria Rita Valdez de Villa and she had seven daughters. She called her rancho San Antonio and built the first house on what is now the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and North Alpine Drive. In 1852, she was attacked by Native Americans, narrowly escaping death. Her young son summoned a posse who chased the renegades up into what is now Benedict Canyon. A plaque at the corner of Chevy Chase Drive commemorates the site of the last great battle in Beverly Hills.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Beverly Hills History - Early Business Failures</image:title>
<image:caption>The land now known as Beverly Hills survived a series of spectacular business failures and many name changes before becoming the most famous small town in the world. In 1854, Maria Rita sold her 4,000 acre rancho to Benjamin Wilson and Henry Hancock who hoped to farm it and raise cattle. Wilson eventually lent his name to a local mountain and Hancock Park is became an upscale residential neighborhood. Drought foiled Wilson and Hancock’s plan, so they sold to Dr. Edward Preuss in 1868 who hoped to raise sheep.</image:caption>

<image:title>Beverly Hills History - The Rodeo Land and Water Company</image:title>
<image:caption>When oil was discovered in the nearby La Brea Tarpits, the land now known as Beverly was sold to the Amalgamated Oil Company. Among its key investors were Burton Green, Max Whittier, and Henry Huntington. They never found much oil, only water. On the brink of failure, they changed their plan and formed a real estate partnership called the Rodeo Land and Water Company.</image:caption>

<image:title>Beverly Hills History - The Beverly Hills Hotel</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1906, the City's streets were laid, but this was still a barren wilderness. By 1910, only six new houses had been built. In 1912, a plan was devised to turn the newly-named Beverly Hills into a resort destination by building a lavish hotel on Sunset Boulevard. The Beverly Hills Hotel still stands there to this day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A century ago, the first thing prospective home buyers would see when they got off the trolley in the treeless desert of old Beverly was a lush lily pond. In this photo from 1915, you’ll notice there are no houses, streets, or palm trees. The lily pond and Beverly Hills sign fell into disrepair but were restored in 2014 through the generosity of Robbie Anderson, great-grandson of the woman who built the Beverly Hills Hotel, and Beverly Hills mayor Lili Bosse.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On April 24, 1926, an election was held to decide if Beverly Hills would remain an independent city or become part of Los Angeles. Silent screen stars, including Mary Pickford and Rudolf Valentino, campaigned door-to-door in favor or independence and the vote passed 507 to 337. <image:caption>Beverly Hills was incorporated on January 28, 1914, but had no mayor. In 1925, Will Rogers was proclaimed honorary mayor and successfully lobbied Washington, D.C. for a post office. His house, near the Beverly Hills Hotel, had its own polo field. When Rogers died tragically in a plane crash in 1935, the hotel named its bar in his honor and the Polo Lounge was born.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hundreds of Beverly Hills residents joined the war effort overseas. At home, the City did its part with victory gardens, gas rationing, and scrap metal drives. Others worked silently to save refugees and Beverly Hills citizens bought millions of dollars of war bonds.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Beverly Hills City Hall was built in 1931 in a lavish Spanish Revival style. With ornate ceilings, marble floors, and a mosaic tower, it cost one million Depression-era dollars to build. <image:caption>From 1920 to 1924, a giant auto speedway that seated 70,000 fans covered the flats from Wilshire to Pico, from Beverly Drive to where the high school would soon be built. When the all- wood racetrack was demolished in 1924, it made way for the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and the major housing developments of the southwest.</image:caption>

<image:title>Historic People and Stories of Beverly Hills - COLONEL EDSON BENEDICT</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1868, Colonel Edson Benedict bought the canyon north of Beverly Hills that still bears his name. He hunted deer, grew walnuts, and gathered honey from his colonies of bees. In 1876, he shipped 45,000 pounds of honey from the docks of Santa Monica. During that time, the hotel was actually a small city unto itself where almost all the residents of Beverly Hills lived. In 1915, Anderson donated the land across Sunset Boulevard for the city’s first park. It’s now known as Will Rogers Memorial Park with a beautiful fountain that bears her name.</image:caption>

She and her seven daughters raised cattle and crops from their adobe located near what is currently the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Rexford Drive. He donated Westlake/MacArthur Park to the city of Los Angeles and named the wide, four-block-long street that runs through the middle of it after himself. It has grown much longer since 1894 and now goes from downtown to the ocean. Although most Los Angeles residents don’t remember Gaylord, they all know the name Wilshire.</image:caption>

Sinatra’s car was there in the blink of an eye. As he was about to drive away, Sinatra asked the valet, “By the way, kid, who gave you the hundred bucks?” The young man smiled gratefully and replied, “You did, sir.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>On July 7, 1946, billionaire industrialist, film producer, and record-setting aviator Howard Hughes crashed his experimental XF-11 reconnaissance plane into several houses in Beverly Hills. Hughes tried to land on the Los Angeles Country Club golf course and instead crashed about 300 feet short of it. The plane tore half the roof from a two-story dwelling at 803 North Linden Drive. The XF-11 continued its swath of devastation, slicing through the home at 808 Whittier Drive and bursting into flames. Hughes was saved from death by Marine Sgt. William Lloyd Durkin who was driving by. Hughes never fully recovered from his injuries. The crash was dramatized in the 2004 film The Aviator with Leonardo DiCaprio as Hughes.</image:caption>

The man next to him is Oskar Schindler who is credited with saving the lives of 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. Pfefferberg and his wife, Ludmilla, were among those spared. After the war, he brought Schindler to Beverly Hills to show him what a wonderful life he had made possible. He told Schindler, "You gave me life. I will make you immortal." For years, Pfefferberg told Schindler’s story to every person who came into his store. Finally, an Australian writer named Thomas Keneally showed interest in turning the tale into a book. Pfefferberg went into his storeroom and emerged with a piece of paper that was Schindler's famous list. It was Pfefferberg who convinced director Steven Spielberg to make the film and on the night Schindler’s List, won seven Academy Awards, Spielberg thanked Pfefferberg saying, “I owe him such a debt. He has carried the story of Oskar Schindler to all of us.”</image:caption>

I wanted to get picked first for the team, any team, and I usually was.” Torres went on to become a 12-time Olympic medalist; the first and only American swimmer to win medals in five Olympic Games (1984, 1988, 1992, 2000, and 2008). For her most recent win in Beijing, she was 41 years-old. Despite having, "No interest in dresses, dolls, hopscotch, or other stereotypically girly things," Torres has fond memories of growing up in Beverly Hills during the 1970s and ’80s. A local girl who learned to swim in the pool at her mother's house and later at the Beverly Hills YMCA, she became one of the greatest Olympians of all time.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Beverly Hillbillies was a CBS sitcom that ran from 1962 to 1971 and was twice ranked the number one series of the year. It was about a backwoods family that strikes oil in the Ozarks and moves to the Hills (of Beverly, with swimmin’ pools and movie stars). It starred local Beverly Hills resident Buddy Ebson along with Max Baer Jr., Donna Douglas, and Irene Ryan as Granny. Silly as it was, it established Beverly Hills as an aspirational destination.
